(Figure 4. Opening string material from the third movement, violas and violoncelli, measures 0-4) Strings introduce a sombre second idea at più mosso, which is related thematically to the Easternsounding theme from the first movement. These two themes form the basis for the movement, which grows to an emotional climax, followed by a mysterious and tense passage featuring tremolo strings. The first and second themes return, with the latter now being scored for 12 solo violins, solo viola, cello and bass, along with the tolling bell. The fourth movement can be thought of as a symphonic dance. The regular pulse and motivic ideas show an influence from rock music, which I was interested in at the time. I also use one of the principles of Sibelius’s symphonies, that of presenting musical fragments which then coalesce into a big statement near the end: in this case, the section starting at R2, where the brass blaze over a repeated rock-like bass line. The various fragments include the opening fourths on double basses (m.1), the horn theme (m.5), an energetic theme (five measures after C2), and a rising chromatic idea (at E2). In the contrasting second section of this movement the meter changes to Fh combined with Bd, and the Easternsounding theme from the first movement returns one more time, elongated into a lengthy lyrical statement. > œ œ œ ˙ > œ œ œ œ œ ° 2 4 2 4 f f mp > œ œ œ ˙ > œ œ œ œ œ f f mp B 6 . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 8 œ œ œ œ œ œ œ œ œ œ œ œ œ œ œ œ œ œ œ œ œ œ œ œ p p Following a climax, the bass clarinet takes up the double bass theme from the start, and it is now mixed with the energetic theme. The true recapitulation begins six measures after M2, with the horn theme returning, but from here on the rate of change speeds up, culminating in the symphony’s climax from R2 through to three measures after U2. From here to the end is a coda, in which we hear fragments of the themes, as the music winds down to a quiet conclusion. The sonorous strings from the opening of the symphony return as the pulse slowly dies, and the last sound we hear is the tam-tam. Although this symphony is centred around the pitch G, it ends on the ambiguous C–G–E–F chord, suggesting an extinguishing of purpose and life. Performance notes The tam-tam and log drum should be large. The two tom-toms should be relatively high pitched.
