by John Psathas | Percussion Quartet

4BY4

4BY4 was commissioned by a consortium of 14 organizations led by Dr. Omar Carmenates and the Furman University Percussion Ensemble along with: Florida State University Percussion Ensemble, University of Kentucky Percussion Ensemble, University of North Texas Percussion Ensemble, University of South Carolina Percussion Ensemble, University of Central Florida Percussion Ensemble, Clemson University Percussion Ensemble, Coastal Carolina University Percussion Ensemble, Tennessee Tech University Percussion Ensemble, University of Tennessee - Martin Percussion Ensemble, Winthrop University Percussion Ensemble, Truman State University Percussion Ensemble, Texas A&M University - Commerce Percussion Ensemble, and The nief-norf Project. 4BY4 received its premiere performance by Dr. Omar Carmenates, Tommy Dobbs, Matt Filosa and Dr. Luis Rivera at Daniel Recital Hall, Furman University, South Carolina, USA, on 24 January, 2013. The same performers recorded this work for Omar Carmenates’ album The Gaia Theory on Rattle Records (RAT-D039). Performance notes • Hauptstimme are used in the score and parts to show principal voices. Material within the hauptstimme should be played more prominently than the surrounding material. Note that there are passages containing multiple hauptstimme lines across some or all parts, organised in either an interlocking or layered manner. Players should ensure that material not included within a hauptstimme is played in a consistent fashion to provide an overall even balance throughout the work. • Percussion 2: Conga drums are to be played with the hands. All conga notes are to played as open tones. • Percussion 3: The higher sounding snare drum should ideally be a piccolo snare. All accents in this part are to be performed as rim shots, where the stick hits the drum head and rim simultaneously, resulting in a loud ‘crack’. Rim clicks are to be performed in a cross-stick style, where the stick and hand rest on the drum head and the stick strikes the rim, resulting in the ‘click’ sound often heard in Latin music.
